Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh assigned the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Public Security to continue to direct relevant authorities to urgently review and handle the case of 7 frozen fish containers of Maersk Vietnam Company Limited in custody in Hai Phong Port in accordance with the law.
Earlier, on 13 September, 2016, the Saigon Economic Times had an article about the Maersk Vietnam Company Limited sending documents requesting some relevant authorities to quickly handle the case that the Company’s frozen food shipments were seized in Hai Phong port from the begging of 2016 till now but no decisions have been made while costs for containers storage were very expensive.
Regarding the case, the Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc assigned the Ministry of Finance to direct the General Department of Customs to urgently check the reported contents and clarify the detention of the shipments and strictly punish negative signs or signs of making difficulties for the Company in compliance with the law, then report the Prime Minister before 5 October, 2016.
On 19 October, 2016, the Ministry of Finance had sent a document to report the Prime Minister. After considering the report of the Ministry of Finance, on behalf of the Prime Minister, Deputy Minister Truong Hoa Binh assigned the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Public Security to continue to direct the relevant authorities to urgently review and handle the above case in accordance with the law.
Besides, the Deputy Prime Minister also assigned the Ministry of Information and Communication to chair and collaborate with the Ministry of Finance, Maersk Vietnam Company Limited to inspect and clarify the basis and accuracy of information on this case of Saigon Economic Times; the communication agency must be responsible for any violations and inaccurate information under the law.

Through the findings, that the Hai Phong Customs must hold 7 containers of the Maersk Vietnam Company Limited in custody for such a long time is due to these containers contained prohibited goods “toothfish”. The “toothish” in the 7 containers was exhibit of international criminal cases which needed legal assistance from foreign countries, leading to spend a lot of time for settlement Thus, the Hai Phong Customs acknowledged that the above shipments had illegal signs when transporting to Vietnam (Tan Vu port, Hai Phong), so it needed inspecting and handling under the law and international treaties of Vietnam |
